Our 501(c)(3) Status

Prison Education Foundation has received IRS approval of its 501(c)(3) tax exempt status. Specifically, we operate and are classified under IRC § 501(c)(3) as a 509(a)(1) public charity.

Accordingly, our grant writers prepare and submit grant proposals to private “nonoperating” 501(c)(3) foundations which exist to provide grants to other 501(c)(3) charitable organizations, such as Prison Education Foundation, which do operate their own charitable purpose programs. We anticipate that these other 501(c)(3) organizations, along with major corporate donors, will be our primary source of funds.

Individuals and churches may also participate in making higher education available to prisoners by making donations to the foundation.

As an approved IRS 501(c)(3) organization, all donations made to the Prison Education Foundation qualify as tax-deductible gifts to charity and may be tax-deductible to the donor. Please consult your personal tax advisor for details regarding your personal situation.

We will issue a tax statement to confirm receipt of any gift.

You may rely on this public statement of our 501(c)(3) status, or you may contact the IRS directly for verification prior to making any donation. We would also be happy to send you, upon request, a copy of our IRS Form 1023, our IRS Determination Letter, our annual IRS Form 990 filing, our audited financial statements and our Annual Report.
